Training for the Moments That Matter: Operate Breathing Apparatus at AWCC
In high-risk industries such as oil & gas, energy, mining, construction, emergency response, and confined space operations, breathable air cannot be taken for granted. From H₂S exposure and irrespirable atmospheres to fire, smoke, and emergency evacuations, the ability to correctly operate breathing apparatus (BA) can mean the difference between getting out safely — or not at all.
That’s why the Australian Well Control Centre’s Operate Breathing Apparatus (MSMWHS216) Program is designed differently.
This is not box-ticking training. It is purpose-built, industry-led, and grounded in real operational experience.
A Unique BA Program Built by Those Who’ve Worked in Life-Threatening Environments
AWCC’s Operate Breathing Apparatus program is led by experienced industry professionals who have operated BA units in some of the most hazardous environments imaginable — including:
-
Firefighting and smoke-filled environments
-
Asphyxiated and oxygen-deficient atmospheres
-
Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) working conditions
-
High-risk industrial and confined space operations
The course itself has been designed by Military and Fire Brigade professionals, making it a high-quality, one-of-a-kind training experience exclusive to AWCC.
Such is the quality of this program, it is designed to build confidence and competence so participants can get themselves out of trouble — not into it.
Queensland BA Requirements: What You Need to Know
To meet Queensland WHS requirements, workers must be:
-
Clean-shaven where the respirator facepiece seals to the skin
-
Able to achieve a correct face seal at all times
⚠️ Participants with non-compliant facial hair cannot meet competency requirements and therefore cannot be deemed competent for the unit.
This requirement is strictly enforced to ensure safety and compliance.
Knowledge Skills Gained on Completion
Upon successful completion, participants will demonstrate knowledge of:
-
The effects of irrespirable atmospheres on the human body
-
When and why breathing apparatus is required
-
Characteristics, components, and operation of compressed air BA
-
Safety requirements, SOPs, and safe work practices
-
Use of personal lines, tallies, and control procedures
-
Entrapment and emergency response procedures
-
Effective communication protocols while wearing BA
-
Documentation of tests, checks, and operational communications
Why Choose AWCC for Your Operate Breathing Apparatus Training?
AWCC was founded by people who have worked in your industry. We’ve done the work, operated in hazardous environments, and understand what is actually required in the field to remain safe, compliant, and operationally effective.
Gone are the days of:
-
Quick, low-value VOCs
-
Climbing into converted containers
-
Training environments that don’t reflect real conditions
For rig work and high-risk operations, that approach simply isn’t relevant.
What Sets AWCC Apart

Nationally Accredited Training Certificate
-
Instruction by real industry professionals (oil & gas, underground mining, emergency response)
-
Practical training conducted in the AWCC Smoke House facility
-
Ability to manage larger groups with quality outcomes
