The Forklift course is a 3 day program providing students with the knowledge and skills to safely operate a forklift truck, including planning work, completing pre-start checks, determining load capacity and shifting loads. Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to apply for their High Risk Work Licence for LF through Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.

‘The LF high risk work licence class allows you to use forklift trucks, but does not include order-picking forklift trucks (see below).

Forklift truck means a powered industrial truck equipped with lifting media made up of a mast and an elevating load carriage to which is attached a pair of fork arms or other arms that can be raised 900mm or more above the ground, but does not include a pedestrian-operated truck or a pallet truck.’

Course Details

This course includes safely operating a forklift truck, as well as planning to operate and shutdown procedures. Students will learn to complete forklift tasks, including moving loads.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and understand workplace health and safety legislation, standards and codes of practice
  • Identify hazards in relation to forklift operations, assess the risks and implement risk controls
  • Identify and use communication methods relevant to the task
  • Determine or calculate the weight of the load
  • Select the appropriate forklift and attachments according to the task requirements
  • Complete pre-start and start-up checks prior to commencing operations
  • Operate the forklift safely based on operating capacity
  • Operate and shift all loads safely
  • Adapt to changes in workplace situations, including unsafe conditions
  • Shut down and secure the forklift
  • Complete post-operational checks and report any issues

Anyone completing the above tasks must either:

  • Hold a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) for LF (Forklift Truck); or
  • Be enrolled in a forklift course through a Registered Training Organisation and be operating under the supervision of a person who holds a HRWL for LF.

Target Audience

This program is designed for anyone who is required to operate a forklift as part of their workplace duties, such as:

  • Warehouse staff
  • Delivery personnel
  • Construction workers
  • Farm hands

Licenced Operators

Licenced Operators who have let their HRWL expire may apply for reassessment. Please contact our office to discuss your options to renew your licence.

Entry Requirements

Students must supply three (3) forms of ID prior to their assessment. Copies of ID will be kept on file (with the exception of bank or credit cards) as evidence that ID requirements have been met.

Age Restrictions

Per Workplace Health and Safety Queensland requirements, students must be 18 years of age to apply for their HRWL. As such, students will not be assessed until after their 18th birthday.

Outcomes

This course is nationally recognised. Students who successfully complete all course requirements will be issued with:

  • A Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0003 Licence to operate a forklift truck
  • A Candidate Assessment Summary (CAS) to apply for a High Risk Work Licence with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. This application must be made within 60 days of assessment. Visit www.worksafe.qld.gov.au for further information

Delivery

Option 1: 3 days of face-to-face training sessions, including assessments:

  • Knowledge Assessment
  • Calculations Assessment
  • Practical Assessment

Delivery length may vary depending on client needs. Students who require additional support, or do not successfully complete all assessment requirements, will be placed on a logbook. While on a logbook, students can operate a forklift truck in their workplace, while under the supervision of a licence LF operator.

Option 2: Enrolment in the forklift course, induction onto the forklift and a logbook issued. While on a logbook, students can operate a forklift truck in their workplace, while under the supervision of a licence LF operator. Once students are confident in their forklift operations, a final assessment will be conducted.
