Vocational competency

Vocational competency in a particular industry consists of broad industry knowledge and experience, usually combined with a relevant industry qualification. A person who has vocational competency will be familiar with the content of the vocation and will have relevant current experience in the industry.

The Standards specify that trainers and assessors are skilled VET practitioners with current industry skills and knowledge. This ensures students receive the training they need and graduates are properly assessed before being issued with a qualification or statement of attainment.

All trainers and assessors undertake professional development in VET—including in competency-based training and assessment.

I have a lot of qualifications. Do I need currency for all of them?

You must demonstrate competency and currency for any courses you train.

What if I cannot obtain industry currency?

You should talk to your RTO to discuss options. Obtaining and maintaining industry competency and currency is an important aspect of the VET sector.

Do I need to track all this information and submit it to the RTO?

Yes. Accepting a role as a Trainer and Assessor is accepting the compliance requirements of that role.

Do I have to use this form to submit my evidence?

No. However, this is a simple way for the RTO to gather and collate the data. If you want to supply another way, please confirm with your RTO.

What are some ways I can demonstrate competency and currency?

There is no ‘one’ answer to this. You should review the ASQA guidelines, which have many articles that outline this topic.

Do I also need to demonstrate continual professional development towards my TAE?

Yes. Evidence must show how you improve your training and assessing skill sets.
