When “Normal” Isn’t Safe: Recent Incidents Highlight Line-of-Fire Risk in Australian Oil and Gas


Three recent incidents from across the Australian oil and gas industry share a common, uncomfortable thread. None resulted in serious injury, yet each was rated by investigators as having the potential to cause a fatality, or worse. In every case, the root cause traces back to the same failure: a hazard that had become normalised, or a deviation from procedure that was never properly risk-assessed.

Wet Tripping and a Cellar Fire

During a well workover, a crew was pulling tubing out of hole “wet,” with crude oil still present, draining through a mud bucket into the cellar. After twelve joints, static electricity ignited the crude. The fire spread through the cellar before the Emergency Shutdown was activated and handheld extinguishers brought it under control. No one was harmed. No well containment was lost. But the investigation found the potential consequence was multiple fatalities.

The technical cause was electrostatic discharge: high-velocity, splashing crude built up static charge on ungrounded and insulating materials in low humidity until it arced to a grounded conductor. The organisational cause was more revealing. Tripping wet was a long-accepted practice on this well, the stuck sucker rod pump hadn’t triggered proper stuck-pump management, and the ignition hazard associated with tripping wet had never been specifically identified in any procedure or risk assessment. It had simply been done this way before, without incident.

The response addressed both layers: ceasing all wet trips outright, tightening stuck-pump management, auditing rig hoses for certified earth-bonded systems, and aligning static ignition controls with AS 1940 (Storage and Handling of Flammable and Combustible Liquids).

A Dropped Kickboard Above an Active Walkway

A scaffolding team completing final adjustments around a crane pedestal dropped a 2.4 kg kickboard from a platform 6.5 metres up. No barriers or exclusion zones had been established beneath the work area, because the erection and adjustment phase itself hadn’t been treated as “working at height” for risk assessment purposes. The drop zone happened to sit directly above a walkway regularly used by welding crews. DROPS calculations rated the potential outcome as fatal.

The gap wasn’t equipment or training. It was coordination. Scaffolders and welders working the same footprint hadn’t held a toolbox discussion before work began, and loose items at height weren’t tethered. The fix, aligned with Safe Work Australia’s scaffolding guidance and the IOGP Life-Saving Rules, was procedural: tether everything staged at height, barricade exclusion zones whenever work or materials are aloft, and bring all parties sharing a work area into the conversation before the first tool goes up.

A Deviation That Nearly Cost a Life

The third incident occurred during sea-fastening on a carousel, where a turnbuckle needed adjusting to align with a padeye. When the bottom section wouldn’t rotate freely, the crew improvised, lowering the turnbuckle to a 60-degree resting position and rotating the top section instead of the centre, as the procedure required. A 38 kg pin dislodged and fell 3.4 metres, missing a worker by roughly 400 millimetres.

The turnbuckle’s maintenance had lapsed, forcing the improvisation. But the deeper failure was that the deviation itself went unassessed. No one paused to evaluate what changed when the method changed, even though permit and risk assessment procedures existed. The response now requires a functional check of turnbuckles and locking pins before fastening begins, and mandates that any deviation from a Safe Work Method Statement triggers a fresh risk assessment, echoing the IOGP Life-Saving Rule to obtain authorisation before deviating from procedure.

What These Incidents Teach Us

Taken together, these three events point to lessons that reach beyond their specific tasks.

Accepted practice is not assessed practice. Tripping tubing wet had been done before without incident, and that history was mistaken for proof it was safe. It had simply never been tested against the wrong conditions. Any task that has become “how we’ve always done it” deserves a fresh look at whether the hazard was ever actually identified, or just never triggered.

Deviations need the same rigour as the original plan. The turnbuckle crew adapted sensibly to equipment that wasn’t working as designed, but the moment the method changed, so did the risk, and no one re-assessed. A Safe Work Method Statement is only as good as the discipline to stop and reassess when the situation stops matching it.

Task boundaries are often drawn too narrowly. The dropped kickboard occurred during scaffold erection, a phase never treated as “working at height” in its own right, above a walkway shared with welding crews who were never part of the risk conversation. Where work overlaps with other crews in time or space, the risk assessment has to extend to that overlap.

Every one of these incidents was rated a potential fatality, and every one was avoided by a narrow margin. That margin is not a control. The real test for any operation is whether hazards are identified and managed before the event, not how fortunate the outcome was after it. For crews and supervisors, that means treating routine tasks, adapted methods, and shared work areas as the places most likely to hide an unassessed risk, and building the habit of pausing to ask: what’s changed, and has anyone actually looked at it?

Five Training Mistakes That Cost Companies Thousands


In the Australian oil and gas industry, training is often viewed as a necessary cost of doing business. But the right training is not simply about ticking a compliance box or collecting certificates. When training is poorly planned, rushed, outdated or disconnected from the actual work being performed, the financial consequences can quickly reach thousands of dollars—or far more.

For companies operating across drilling, well servicing, gas, energy and associated field operations, these are five common training mistakes that can become extremely expensive.

1.Training people for certificates instead of competency

One of the most costly mistakes is assuming that a certificate automatically means a worker is ready for the job.

A worker may hold a nationally recognised qualification or statement of attainment, but still lack the practical understanding required to work safely and effectively in a real oil and gas environment. In high-risk industries, the difference between knowing the theory and being able to apply it under pressure is significant.

Quality training should connect the learning outcomes to the workplace. This includes understanding equipment, site procedures, hazards, permits, communication expectations and the realities of working in environments such as drilling rigs, well servicing operations or gas facilities.

2.Relying on outdated or generic training

Oil and gas operations are not identical. A new employee working on a land-based drilling rig may require a very different training pathway from someone entering well servicing, gas processing or offshore operations.

Using generic training materials that do not reflect the actual workplace can leave significant gaps. Workers may understand broad safety principles but not know how those principles apply to the equipment, procedures and hazards they will encounter on site.

Training should be contextualised to the industry and, where appropriate, the specific role. Employers should also regularly review whether training remains aligned with current training package requirements, workplace practices and regulatory expectations.

3.Rushing training to get workers into the field

When a company urgently needs workers, the pressure to shorten training can be significant. However, rushing a worker through training often creates a much larger cost later.

A worker who has not had enough time to develop practical skills may require additional supervision, retraining or remedial support. In the worst-case scenario, poor preparation can contribute to equipment damage, incidents, downtime or injury.

In high-risk industries, training must allow enough time for learners to develop knowledge, practise skills and demonstrate competency. The cheapest training option is rarely the training that gets a worker through the door fastest. It is the training that prepares them to perform safely and competently once they arrive.

4.Ignoring the value of entry-level and land-based experience

Many people entering the Australian oil and gas industry immediately focus on securing offshore work. However, offshore positions are highly competitive, and new workers often benefit significantly from developing foundational experience on land first.

A structured entry-level pathway can allow a worker to gain exposure to equipment, terminology, drilling processes, workplace expectations and safety systems before progressing into more specialised roles.

For employers, this can reduce the amount of basic onboarding required. For workers, it can provide a clearer pathway into roles such as floorman, motorman or other operational positions as their experience develops.

Investing in foundational training early can therefore reduce future recruitment and onboarding costs while building a stronger internal talent pipeline.

5.Treating training as a one-off event

Training should not end when a certificate is issued.

Competency needs to be supported through workplace experience, supervision, feedback and ongoing development. A new worker may complete formal training but still require structured support while adapting to the pace, conditions and expectations of a real operation.

Companies that fail to monitor whether training is actually translating into workplace performance may continue investing in employees who have not developed the required capability.

The most effective approach is to view training as part of a workforce development pathway—not a single transaction.

For Australian oil and gas companies, the cost of poor training can include repeated courses, lost productivity, excessive supervision, equipment damage, recruitment costs and regulatory risk. Meet Australia’s Only Female Motorman Driving Change in the Oil & Gas Industry

In an industry where competence is measured every day and respect is earned through performance, Alexis “Lexi” Seaton is quietly redefining what is possible.

Currently recognised as Australia’s only female Motorman working on an active drilling rig, Lexi is proving that success in the oil and gas industry is determined not by gender, but by attitude, capability and an unwavering commitment to learning. Her recent achievement of successfully completing IWCF Well Control Level 3 on her first attempt is another significant milestone—one that many experienced rig personnel find challenging.

While her accomplishment deserves recognition, Lexi is quick to shift the focus away from herself and back to the job.

“When you’re finding something difficult, you’re probably doing it the wrong way,” she says. “There is usually a better, safer and smarter way to do it.”

That practical mindset has become a defining characteristic of her career.

More Than Just “The Female Hand”

Like many people entering the drilling industry, Lexi’s biggest concern wasn’t the physical work—it was whether she would be able to meet the same expectations placed on every other crew member.

“I was worried I wouldn’t be able to perform to the same level as my male co-workers.”

Those concerns quickly faded as experience replaced uncertainty. One of the biggest turning points came after she progressed beyond the Leasehand role.

“I remember thinking all they wanted me to do was clean. Once I moved onto the floor and a new Leasehand started, I realised that wasn’t because I was a woman—that’s simply the Leasehand’s job.”

It was an important lesson in understanding the structure of a drilling crew and one that reinforced an important industry truth: every role has value, and every position is part of the pathway to greater responsibility.

Respect Is Earned Through Competence

Anyone who has spent time on a drilling rig understands that respect is rarely given—it is earned.

Interestingly, Lexi doesn’t believe being a woman has created additional pressure.

“I set high standards for myself,” she explains. “The scrutiny is welcome because I always want to improve, and I’d expect the same standards from everyone.”

That attitude reflects the mindset found in many of the industry’s highest-performing personnel. Continuous improvement, accountability and a willingness to learn are qualities that transcend gender and experience.

Her success in IWCF Well Control training demonstrated exactly that.

Completing the internationally recognised qualification on the first attempt requires not only technical knowledge but also the ability to make sound operational decisions under pressure—skills that directly contribute to safer drilling operations.

Finding Confidence at Height

Despite her confidence today, Lexi openly admits there were moments early in her career that tested her resolve.

The first time she climbed the derrick remains one of those defining memories.

“I was scared. I got to the monkey board, froze, and the Derrickman had to hook me up. I sat in the corner for a while and just watched.”

Like many experiences in the oilfield, confidence came with exposure.

“I found my feet, and now it’s no worries.”

It is an honest reminder that confidence isn’t something people arrive with—it is something they develop through experience, mentoring and supportive teammates.

A Different Perspective on the Rig

When asked what women bring to operational crews, Lexi believes diversity of thought is one of the industry’s greatest strengths.

“Sometimes I think about things differently,” she says. “The guys are supportive enough to listen and explain things, and sometimes that different perspective makes people stop and wonder why they hadn’t thought of it sooner.”

Modern drilling operations rely on collaboration, communication and effective risk management. Different perspectives can often improve decision-making, particularly in high-risk environments where every opinion deserves consideration.

Changing Perceptions

One of the biggest barriers preventing more women from entering the industry, according to Lexi, is perception.

“There is this belief that the work is too physical or that it’s still a male-dominated environment.”

While drilling remains physically demanding, today’s operations utilise mechanical lifting aids, improved ergonomics and safer work practices that make many tasks accessible to a broader workforce.

More importantly, workplace culture continues to evolve.

“My company has been incredibly supportive. I was one of the first women working there, and now there’s at least one female on every rig. They regularly ask for feedback and make sure things like PPE and workplace needs are being addressed.”

It demonstrates how strong leadership and an inclusive culture benefit everyone—not just women entering the industry.

Looking Ahead

Lexi’s ambitions extend well beyond her current role.

Her goal is to become a Driller, progress into Rig Management, and one day potentially work as a Company Representative. For now, however, she believes rig management offers the opportunity to remain closely connected to field operations while leading high-performing crews.

For women considering a career in drilling, her advice is refreshingly simple:

“Have a crack. You’ll surprise yourself.”

It is difficult to argue with someone who has already done exactly that

Lexi’s story is not simply about breaking barriers—it is about demonstrating what the oil and gas industry has always valued most: competence, professionalism and continuous improvement.

What’s Changing in the Australian Energy Sector?


As at July 2026, Australia’s energy sector is not moving through a simple replacement of fossil fuels with renewables. It is operating two systems at once: rapidly expanding renewable generation and storage, while continuing to rely on gas, LNG, liquid fuels and established infrastructure for industrial demand, export earnings and system reliability.

For industry professionals, the key change is not the disappearance of oil and gas, but the changing role, regulation and performance expectations placed on the sector. AEMO’s latest planning continues to identify renewable energy, storage, upgraded networks and gas-powered backup as interconnected parts of Australia’s future energy system.

Domestic gas policy is entering a new phase

The Australian Government has announced a domestic gas reservation scheme scheduled to commence on 1 July 2027. Entities intending to export LNG will be required to supply the Australian market with gas equivalent to 20 per cent of their annual export volumes.

Consultation on the draft design framework closed on 30 June 2026, with the government now refining the framework and drafting legislation.

This is a significant market intervention. It is intended to improve domestic supply security and contracting transparency, but producers, pipeline operators, manufacturers and energy retailers are closely examining how the final design may affect investment, pricing and long-term supply agreements.

The practical question will be whether the final scheme encourages additional production or primarily reallocates existing supply.

Short-term gas security has improved—but the structural challenge remains

AEMO’s 2026 Gas Statement of Opportunities reports improved gas adequacy through 2029 due to increased supply capability, infrastructure investment and lower demand forecasts.

However, production from legacy southern fields is forecast to decline by 46 per cent over the next five years. New supply, storage and transport investment will be required from 2030 under most weather conditions.

Infrastructure is therefore becoming as important as resource availability. APA has committed $260 million to Stage 3A of its East Coast Gas Grid expansion. The project is expected to increase north-to-south capacity by 11 per cent, including a 20 per cent increase in northern gas transport capacity into Victoria, by winter 2028.

Major projects continue to reshape supply

Investment remains active across Australia’s producing regions.

Santos shipped the first LNG cargo from the Barossa project through Darwin LNG in January 2026. Woodside’s Scarborough Energy Project is more than 96 per cent complete, excluding Pluto Train 1 modifications, and is targeting its first LNG cargo in the fourth quarter of 2026.

In Queensland, Senex says its Atlas and Roma North developments are on track to contribute approximately 60 petajoules per year to the east coast market. Both developments are undergoing capacity expansion, supporting manufacturers, energy retailers and industrial users across eastern Australia.

These developments demonstrate that new supply is continuing. However, projects are increasingly assessed against domestic commitments, emissions intensity, community expectations, approval risk and infrastructure access—not production volume alone.

Gas is becoming a reliability fuel

AEMO’s 2026 Integrated System Plan confirms that the least-cost pathway for the National Electricity Market remains renewables connected by transmission, firmed by storage and backed by gas.

As coal generation retires, gas-powered generation is expected to operate less continuously but become more important during peak demand, renewable shortfalls and prolonged periods of low wind or solar generation.

This creates a different operating model: potentially lower annual utilisation, but higher expectations for rapid response, plant reliability, pipeline flexibility and workforce readiness.

Emissions and decommissioning requirements are tightening

The 2026–27 Safeguard Mechanism Review will examine baseline decline rates, scheme coverage, credits, onsite abatement and arrangements for trade-exposed facilities. Consultation on aspects of the review is already underway, with policy positions and potential draft amendments expected in early 2027.

At the same time, offshore decommissioning activity is increasing as mature assets reach late life. New government guidance has clarified when offshore property must be removed and the limited circumstances in which infrastructure may be considered for retention at sea.

For operators and contractors, this means growing demand for capability in emissions management, carbon capture and storage, well integrity, plugging and abandonment, marine logistics and environmental compliance.

What this means for the workforce

The sector needs workers who can move safely between traditional operations, transition projects and emerging decommissioning work. Technical competence must be supported by current well-control knowledge, site induction, safety-critical training and nationally recognised qualifications.

Regional workforce pressure, contractor capacity, competency assurance and access to practical training are already being identified as strategic issues for Queensland’s changing energy sector.

Workplace Training Compliance: Why Competency Matters Before an Incident Occurs


When workplace training is discussed, the conversation often centres around certificates, expiry dates and refresher courses. While these are important, they are only part of the picture. True workplace training compliance is about ensuring people remain competent to perform their job safely—not simply proving they attended a course at some point in the past.

Industries such as oil and gas, mining, construction, manufacturing and transport continue to evolve through new technology, changing legislation and improved work practices. As these changes occur, workers must continue to develop their skills and knowledge. Experience is invaluable, but it should never replace ongoing learning. The most effective organisations recognise that competency is not something achieved once; it is something that must be maintained throughout a person’s career.

This becomes particularly important following a workplace incident. Whether the investigation is conducted by a regulator, insurer or the organisation itself, one of the first areas examined is the competency of those involved. Investigators will often request training records, licences, refresher training history and evidence that workers were capable of performing the task safely on the day of the incident. An organisation that cannot demonstrate this may find itself facing far greater scrutiny than anticipated.

Maintaining workforce competency is therefore about far more than meeting compliance obligations. After 30 Years of Leading People, the Safer Together Frontline Leadership Training Made Me Stop and Think


After more than three decades of leading soldiers, operational teams and frontline workers, I thought I’d seen most leadership courses had to offer. The Safer Together Frontline Leadership Training at Australian Well Control Centre challenged that assumption, not by teaching something completely new, but by reminding me of the leadership fundamentals that experience can sometimes cause us to overlook.

Like many people in leadership positions, I’ve completed more leadership courses than I can remember. Some have been exceptional, some have reinforced what I already knew, and others have simply become another certificate filed away in a drawer.

So, when I sat down in Brisbane on 7 and 8 July to complete the Safer Together Frontline Leadership Training, a practical frontline leadership course designed for supervisors, team leaders and emerging leaders, I thought I knew what to expect.

Within the first hour I realised this wasn’t another leadership course. By the end of the second day, I realised I’d been reminded of things I’d slowly forgotten over the years.

What I found wasn’t another course about management theory or corporate leadership models. It wasn’t about organisational charts, performance reviews or telling people what they should do. It was about something far more important—the everyday behaviours that determine whether people choose to follow you, trust you and perform at their best.

As someone who has spent decades in leadership positions, I was surprised by how many moments during the two days caused me to stop and reflect. Not because the concepts were entirely new, but because they reminded me of things that, over time, can quietly become overlooked or taken for granted. Leadership has a way of becoming habitual. We rely on experience, we solve problems, we make decisions, we stop questioning why we lead the way we do.

One of the earliest discussions focused on culture. Not culture as a vision statement on the wall or a list of corporate values, but culture as “how we do things around here.” It’s a simple phrase, yet it immediately changed the way I was thinking. Every decision a leader makes contributes to culture. Every conversation, every standard accepted, every behaviour ignored and every example set tells people what is truly important. The facilitators broke culture into three surprisingly simple components: systems, behaviours and symbols. Systems influence behaviour. Behaviours become habits. Symbols become the unwritten rules that tell everyone what is truly accepted. Once I started looking at culture through that lens, I couldn’t stop thinking about my own workplace.

That naturally led into discussions around team purpose. It sounds like an obvious question, but when was the last time you genuinely asked your team why they exist? Not what they do, but why they do it. The discussion wasn’t simply about defining a team’s purpose. It challenged us to think much deeper. Who do we really serve? What does fairness look like from our team’s perspective? What does success look like for them, not just for management? What behaviours are we rewarding? What behaviours are we allowing? More importantly, what culture are we unintentionally creating every single day?

One discussion stayed with me. We spend enormous amounts of time measuring hard metrics: production, utilisation, incidents, profitability, KPIs and outputs. Yet very little time measuring the soft metrics that drive every one of those results. Trust. Respect. Belonging. Communication. Leadership. The irony is obvious. We obsess over the outcomes while often neglecting the very things that create them.

For me, however, the strongest discussions centred on trust and psychological safety. In the military we often spoke about trust because lives depended on it. In the energy industry, almost everything we interact with has the potential to seriously injure or kill us. Heavy vehicles. Rotating machinery. High-pressure systems. Electricity. Suspended loads. Hazardous chemicals. Remote locations. Fatigue. Heat. Weather. Human error. Complacency. Every day we rely on people making good decisions, often under pressure. Trust isn’t built during emergencies. It’s built every single day through consistency, authenticity, competence and genuine care for people. It also reinforced something equally important: if people don’t feel psychologically safe to speak up, leaders lose the opportunity to prevent incidents before they occur. How often do we finish a pre-start meeting only to hear the real discussion five minutes later in the crib room, beside the ute or while walking back to the job? If the concerns are genuine, why weren’t they raised when everyone was together? Is the issue really the meeting or is it the culture we’ve unintentionally created?

Another area that genuinely challenged my thinking was accountability. Like many experienced leaders, I’ve always believed accountability was important, but this course reframed how accountability is actually created. It begins long before difficult conversations. It starts with giving people purpose, setting clear expectations, communicating effectively and coaching them to succeed. Only then can accountability become fair and meaningful. Good leaders don’t demand accountability-they create the conditions where accountability naturally occurs. Accountability isn’t something leaders enforce; it’s something they cultivate.

One discussion that really resonated with me centred around expectations. As leaders, we often assume people know what ‘good’ looks like. We assume they understand our standards because we’ve worked alongside them for years. The reality is different. Clear expectations remove assumptions, reduce frustration and provide the foundation upon which accountability is built.

It was a timely reminder that people can’t consistently achieve standards they have never clearly understood.

One of the things I appreciated most was that every topic built on the previous one. Feedback wasn’t taught as a disciplinary tool; it was presented as one of the most important responsibilities of every leader. Constructive conversations became less about correcting people and more about helping them grow. Coaching wasn’t about having all the answers but about asking better questions. Listening wasn’t simply about hearing words. It challenged us to reflect on how we actually listen. Not simply hearing words, but genuinely listening. That was surprisingly confronting. As leaders we often listen with the intention of replying instead of understanding. Once you recognise that habit in yourself, you begin noticing it everywhere. These are skills that sound simple until you honestly assess how often you practice them.

The sessions on self-awareness probably made me reflect the most. After years of leading people, it’s easy to think experience alone is enough. This reminded me that understanding yourself is just as important as understanding your team. Your mindset, your biases, your communication style and your reactions all influence the people around you, often more than you realise. One discussion generated more conversation than almost any other: bias. Not bias in the traditional sense, but the shortcuts our brains naturally take. As leaders we all have people we instinctively trust, people we naturally challenge and people we unconsciously avoid. Until we recognise those biases, we can unintentionally create inconsistency within our teams. That was an uncomfortable but valuable reminder.

Influence was another interesting discussion. Position and authority might gain compliance, but influence earns commitment. The two are very different. One relies on hierarchy. The other relies on credibility. We explored how frontline leaders build influence not through rank, but through consistency, communication and genuine relationships.

The final discussions around communication, influence and developing a personal leadership action plan brought everything together. Rather than leaving with pages of notes that will eventually collect dust, I left with practical actions that I could implement immediately, not only within my own workplace but also in the way I train and mentor others. The structured learning journey concludes by helping participants convert concepts into a practical leadership action plan they can immediately apply within their own teams.

Reflecting on those two days, I realised this wasn’t really a course about leadership techniques. It was a reminder that leadership is about people. It is about creating trust before you need it. Setting expectations before problems arise. Listening before speaking. Coaching before directing. Building culture through actions rather than words

For anyone stepping into a frontline leadership role, this course provides the practical skills needed to make that transition successfully. For experienced leaders like me, it serves as something equally valuable, a chance to revisit the fundamentals that time and experience can sometimes cause us to overlook.

Leadership isn’t a destination you eventually arrive at. It isn’t a qualification you complete or a title printed on a business card. It’s a continual process of learning, adapting and reflecting. After more than 30 years of leading people, I didn’t leave believing I’d discovered the secret to leadership. I left reminded that the fundamentals of leadership still matter. Trust. Culture. Communication. Accountability. Listening. Sometimes the greatest leadership lessons aren’t new ones at all. They’re the ones we’ve slowly allowed routine, experience and familiarity to push into the background.

Gas Test Atmospheres and Personal Gas Monitoring


Imagine walking into a tank that looks completely safe.

You can’t smell anything.

You can’t see anything.

You take a few steps inside and suddenly become dizzy. Within seconds, you’re unconscious.

Unfortunately, incidents like this have happened across Australia and around the world.

The danger wasn’t visible.

It was in the air.

Every year, workers are injured or killed because they entered an area where the atmosphere wasn’t safe. That’s why Gas Test Atmospheres Training has become an essential part of working in the oil and gas, mining, construction, manufacturing and resource industries.

Understanding the atmosphere around you isn’t just about complying with procedures—it’s about making sure everyone goes home safely at the end of the day.

At Australian Well Control Centre (AWCC), we believe people should understand why they perform gas testing, not simply follow a checklist.

What Is a Gas Test Atmosphere?

A gas test atmosphere is simply checking whether the air around you is safe to breathe and safe to work in.

It sounds simple, but the consequences of getting it wrong can be catastrophic.

When workers test the atmosphere, they are looking for three things:

  • Is there enough oxygen?
  • Are there any flammable gases?
  • Are there any toxic gases?

If any one of these is outside safe limits, the job should stop until the hazard has been controlled.

Atmospheric testing is common before entering confined spaces, carrying out hot work, opening process equipment or working around oil, gas and chemical facilities.

Why Can’t We Just Use Our Senses?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in industry.

Many people believe they would smell dangerous gas before it became a problem.

Unfortunately, that isn’t true.

Many hazardous gases have no smell at all.

Others, like Hydrogen Sulphide (H₂S), have a distinctive rotten egg smell at very low concentrations. The problem is that after only a short exposure, your sense of smell stops working. The gas hasn’t disappeared—your body’s warning system has.

Relying on your nose can be one of the most dangerous decisions a worker makes.

That’s why we use gas monitors instead.

The Gases You Are Most Likely to Encounter

Not every workplace contains the same hazards, but several gases are commonly found across the resource industry.

  • Carbon Monoxide (CO)

    Carbon monoxide is produced by diesel engines, generators and combustion equipment.

    It cannot be seen.

    It cannot be smelled.

    Many of its early symptoms—headache, nausea and dizziness—are mistaken for fatigue or dehydration.

    Without monitoring equipment, workers may not realise they are being exposed until it is too late.

  • Hydrogen Sulphide (H₂S)

    Often called the silent killer, H₂S is one of the most dangerous gases found in oil and gas operations.

    It is highly toxic and heavier than air.

    That means it settles into low areas such as pits, tanks, trenches and cellars.

    Workers entering these areas without testing may walk directly into a dangerous atmosphere.

  • Methane (CH₄)

    Methane is the main component of natural gas.

    Although it isn’t poisonous, it creates a serious explosion risk.

    If enough methane mixes with air and finds an ignition source, the results can be devastating.

    Methane can also reduce oxygen levels inside enclosed areas

  • Benzene and Other Vapours

    Crude oil and petroleum products can release hazardous vapours, including benzene.

    Long-term exposure has been linked to serious health conditions.

    These hazards reinforce why atmospheric testing is about much more than preventing explosions.

    It is also about protecting your long-term health.

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)

    Carbon dioxide isn’t poisonous in the traditional sense, but it pushes oxygen out of the atmosphere.

    Less oxygen means your body simply cannot function properly.

What Is a Personal Gas Monitor?

A Personal Gas Monitor (PGM) is a small electronic device worn by workers.

Think of it as another piece of PPE.

Just as your hard hat protects your head, your gas monitor protects you from hazards you cannot see.

Most modern monitors continuously check:

  • Oxygen
  • Flammable gases
  • Hydrogen Sulphide
  • Carbon Monoxide

If dangerous levels are detected, the monitor immediately alarms using sound, flashing lights and vibration.

It gives you the opportunity to leave the area before conditions become life-threatening.

Where Should You Wear It?

This is something many new workers get wrong.

A gas monitor clipped to your belt or sitting in your toolbox cannot monitor the air you are breathing.

The correct location is on your chest or lapel, close to your breathing zone.

After all, the monitor isn’t testing the atmosphere near your boots.

It’s testing the atmosphere entering your lungs.

Why Fixed Gas Detectors Aren’t Enough

Many processing facilities have fixed gas detection systems installed.

These are excellent safety systems.

But they don’t replace a personal monitor.

A fixed detector only measures the atmosphere where it is installed.

You move around.

The gas moves.

Conditions change.

A personal monitor travels with you and continuously checks the air where you are actually working.

Think of it this way.

A fixed detector protects the facility.

A personal gas monitor protects you.

Both are important.

Common Mistakes Workers Make

Most gas-related incidents don’t happen because equipment fails.

They happen because people make assumptions.

Some of the most common mistakes include:

  • Assuming the atmosphere is safe because someone checked it earlier.
  • Ignoring an alarm.
  • Wearing the monitor in the wrong location.
  • Forgetting to bump test the monitor.
  • Using equipment that is overdue for calibration.
  • Believing fresh air is entering the space when it isn’t.

Good habits save lives.

Why Confined Spaces Are So Dangerous

Confined spaces deserve special attention.

These areas often have limited ventilation.

Hazardous gases can collect without anyone knowing.

Oxygen levels can change quickly.

One worker may enter safely.

Ten minutes later, conditions may be completely different.

That’s why confined spaces require atmospheric testing before entry and continuous monitoring while work is taking place.

Atmospheres can change far quicker than most people expect.

Hot Work and Gas Testing

Whenever welding, grinding or cutting is carried out, there is always the possibility of creating sparks.

If flammable gas is present, those sparks may ignite the atmosphere.

For this reason, atmospheric testing forms an important part of hot work permits.

Testing isn’t just completed before work starts.

It often continues throughout the task because conditions can change as equipment is opened or processes are isolated.

Looking After Your Gas Monitor

A gas monitor is only reliable if it is maintained correctly.

Workers should:

  • Inspect the monitor before every shift.
  • Carry out a bump test.
  • Ensure calibration is current.
  • Keep sensors clean.
  • Remove damaged monitors from service immediately.

Skipping these simple checks defeats the purpose of carrying the monitor in the first place.

Why Training Matters

Owning a gas monitor doesn’t automatically make someone safer.

Knowing how to interpret alarms, understand gas behaviour and respond correctly is what makes the difference.

Quality training gives workers the confidence to recognise hazards before they become emergencies.

It also helps supervisors make better decisions when conditions change unexpectedly.

The best safety equipment in the world is only effective when the person using it understands how and why it works.

Australia’s Energy Industry Doesn’t Just Need More People. It Needs More Competent People.


Across Australia’s energy sector, conversations about workforce shortages are becoming increasingly common. Drilling contractors, well servicing companies, operators and support services are all competing for people as activity continues to grow across Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

But perhaps the bigger challenge isn’t a shortage of people.

It’s a shortage of competent people.

For decades, the drilling industry has developed its workforce through a proven pathway. A Leasehand learns the fundamentals of rig operations and develops into a Floorman. As experience and responsibility increase, many progress to Motorman before advancing to Derrickhand. From there, the next step is often Driller, where technical knowledge, leadership and decision-making skills are tested every day.

These positions are not achieved through classroom learning alone. They are earned through exposure to real operations, practical application, problem solving and guidance from experienced industry professionals.

That is why workforce development in the drilling industry is different from many other sectors. It requires more than qualifications. It requires competence.

The challenge facing industry today is not simply attracting people into these career pathways. It is ensuring they are trained by professionals who understand the realities of the work, the expectations of the role and the standards required to operate safely and effectively.

In recent years, many organisations have entered the training market to meet industry demand. Qualifications are important. Compliance is important. Nationally recognised training is important.

However, drilling and well servicing operations require more than theory.

They require functionality.

Workers entering the industry need to understand not only what a procedure says, but why it exists. They need to understand how equipment is used, how crews communicate, how hazards develop and how decisions are made when conditions change. These are lessons that cannot always be learned from a textbook, a PowerPoint presentation or a simulation alone.

They are learned from people who have done the job.

At Australian Well Control Centre (AWCC), our foundations were built in industry long before we became a Registered Training Organisation. We did not start as an RTO and then learn about industry. We started in industry and built an RTO around the needs of industry.

Why Experience Matters in Well Control Training


In well control, theory is essential. Understanding pressure relationships, kick detection, shut-in procedures, and kill methods forms the foundation of safe operations. But theory alone does not develop competence. Competence is built when theory is combined with functionality, application, and experience in the field.

The oil and gas industry operates in an environment where decisions can have immediate consequences for people, assets, production, and the environment. While simulations, calculations, and case studies provide valuable learning opportunities, they cannot fully replicate the operational reality of a developing well control situation.

There is a significant difference between understanding a kick on paper and standing on a rig when one occurs.

When pressures change unexpectedly, alarms activate, and crews look for direction, the challenge becomes more than applying a formula. Human factors begin to influence decision-making. Communication becomes critical. Stress levels rise. The ability to remain calm, identify the problem, and execute the correct response becomes paramount.

This is where experience transforms knowledge into capability.

Professionals who have worked on drilling and well servicing rigs understand that well control is not simply a technical exercise. It is an operational discipline requiring technical knowledge, situational awareness, teamwork, leadership and sound judgement under pressure. They understand the functionality behind the theory because they have applied it in real-world conditions.
